Sandy, who lives at one of our Independent Living homes in Leamington Spa, really enjoyed sharing her festive traditions with us. From memorable moments to meaningful new traditions, she brings the spirit of Christmas to life…
A night to remember…
For Sandy, Christmas Eve holds a special place in her heart. “I love the night before Christmas—I still look out for Santa in the sky.” It's a tradition that reminds her of the magic of the holiday season, even as an adult.
The joy of Christmas dinner
When it comes to Christmas dinner, Sandy’s enthusiasm is clear: " I love EVERYTHING! I could eat it every day!" For her, Christmas dinner isn’t just about the food—it's about making up for the meals she missed as a child. “My mother could never make Christmas dinner, so as a child I missed out on so much," she says. Now, she cherishes every bite.
Memorable Christmas moments
One of Sandy's most cherished memories happened at her Independent Living scheme’s Christmas party last year. I witnessed a resident living with dementia share a dance with a 93-year-old visually impaired lady, and it truly made my day to see both of them so happy” It's these moments of connection that make Christmas truly meaningful for Sandy.
A day of festivities
Sandy’s Christmas Day is filled with food, fun, and time spent with loved ones. “FOOD. TV, entertainment, nibbles,” she laughs, reflecting on the joy of a relaxed holiday. She enjoys hosting friends in her flat, but she also makes time for a special outing. "Going out for Christmas lunch with those from my scheme is enjoyable—this year I’ve organised tour lunch, and the scheme manager has booked the taxi”
Spreading Christmas cheer
For Sandy, the key to a special Christmas is being involved and making the most of the present moment. "Get involved and be happy. Enjoy the moment. Don’t be scared of being alone." Her advice is a reminder that the holiday season is about embracing the joy around you, whether you're surrounded by loved ones or celebrating on your own.
Community celebrations
Sandy enjoys celebrating Christmas with her neighbours and friends in her Independent Living scheme. "We enjoy drinks and nibbles and a Christmas lunch outing. We also love decorating the scheme with trees and lights, and have mince pies with the carols on, followed by Christmas afternoon tea in the lounge." These community gatherings help capture the festive spirit, making Sandy feel at home with her neighbours.
A sense of belonging
For Sandy, one of the most meaningful parts of Christmas is the sense of community she feels. “I like the fact that I’m in a community with like-minded people and I can drop in on friends and not be alone," she shares. "I also like the fact I am warm and cosy in my own home!”
